The Latest Scoop...

The Center for America's First Horse, Inc.

Johnson, Vermont

Newsletter #4                                      May 18, 2011

Steph & Morado
Hello Friends,

After a record-breaking winter, then major flooding in our little town of Johnson,  grass is finally growing! The Center is growing  too as we near completion of our arena, begin to install fencing for more pasture space, and develop new relationships with the community.

I will be honest though in saying the last four months have not been easy! Only with the continued moral, physical, and financial support from friends of The Center have we come to this point. Our important work for the Colonial Spanish horses has not gone unnoticed - validation that we are succeeding in our mission!

With Gratitude,

Stephanie Lockhart

Spotlight on Augustine
Augustine
Augustine

This month meet Augustine. At nearly four years old Augustine has become one of our main ambassador horses because of his friendly and endearing character. Not only is he great with the public, but his natural beauty combined with graceful movement and classic Colonial Spanish horse conformation, makes him a  favorite. Since he was 18 months old, Augustine has attended many public events with us. Last year he was started under saddle by Eliza Lockhart, 13 years old at the time. This season he will resume his training with the hopes of placing him with a competitive rider. Augustine's looks and personality  makes him a great representative of the breed! Visit our website for more about Augustine.

STILL RAISING THE ROOF!

Indoor Arena...

The roof is on, but due to many setbacks out of our control, the installation of electricity and water has yet to be done. We continue to fund raise for the expenses which are estimated at nearly $3,500. Some materials have already been purchased to get the utilities in. We are almost there. Your continued support has brought us this far, let's get'er done! Any contribution you can make to Raise the Roof will see us to the end of this long project!

Here's where your donations for Raise the Roof have gone! This photo was taken April 15th, just two days after the crew arrived from Michigan. They've encountered extreme mud, rain, wind, and pending snow showers but are determined to have the roof on Monday.  We still have another $5,000 to raise to finish the project-but progress is being made! Thank you in advance for any contribution you can make to help us meet our goal!

Dancing With HorsesWorkshop A Success!
Stephanie demonstrating with Morado
Stephanie demonstrating with Morado.

An incredible 3- day workshop was held March 18-20 under the guidance of JoAnna Mendl Shaw of the Equus Projects (www.dancingwithhorses.org.) and Stephanie Lockhart, natural horsemanship professional. JoAnna lead the dancers in the studio focusing on topics such as sensing space, physical listening, teamwork, and creating movement dialogues. Stephanie and JoAnna then worked with the dancers and four of the horses from The Center. They studied the herd dynamics of Thunder, Adelantado, Morado and Maya, learning about leadership, body awareness and communication within the herd, then the dancers transferred their studio work to the horses. What an enriching experience it was for everyone! We look forward to having JoAnna back in September for another Dancing with Horses workshop! Here are a few comments from the dancers and JoAnna:

"I am still high from the exhilaration of being with such beautiful, brilliant, loving creatures (and Stephanie and JoAnna, too :-)) and so much fabulous learning! If JoAnna and Stephanie do this again, DO NOT MISS IT.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for a truly amazing experience, which I know will continue to unfold for me."-Lisa B.

"I had such a great time at the workshop, and learned so much from JoAnna and Stephanie and all my co-participants too. You guys are amazing." -Brie H.

"You were all amazing and inspiring. It is a rare treat to teach a group of people so deeply invested in learning. Huge thanks for your generosity of spirit and passion for movement."- JoAnna Mendl Shaw

Help Raise the Roof!

Only with the help of our many friends have we been able to take the next step in our important work. You have reached deep into your pockets to assist us in Raising the Roof, Buying a Bale, Sponsoring our horses, and supporting our events. In these challenging economic times we realize it's hard to contribute to the many causes that may be close to your heart. Words can't express our gratitude to each of you!
We still need your help though!

We are so close to Raising our Roof--the arena is being delivered March 30th. Once installed, revenue for The Center will be increased 200%! This brings us closer to our goal of self sufficiency and not having to rely solely on donations and fund raising to meet our normal operating expenses. We are $5,000 away from completing this phase of our development.

Any size donation makes a difference. Imagine how many more Colonial Spanish horses we could rescue, and how many children we could provide life enriching experiences to if each person that received this newsletter or visited our web site donated just $5! TOGETHER we can make a difference!

Our Volunteers of the Month!
Johnson State students refurbishing the Caboose

Johnson State College students from the Serve Friday program put in a 6 hour day on March 25th. Five students assisted in renovation of the "Caboose", the temporary office and tack room at The Center. They learned some important skills such as painting, using hand tools, teamwork and problem solving when it came time to put the ceiling in! Many thanks to Mary Anne and Elsie, dedicated Board of Directors for guiding the renovation project! And no volunteer day would be complete at The Center without loading and unloading hay! Many thanks to these enthusiastic students for their help!

From the President:
It's been a heck of a winter here in Vermont, with almost record breaking snowfall and cold temperatures during the month of January. Happy to report that our hardy and well adapted Colonial Spanish horses are having a good time.
Winter hay
Despite some challenges we've faced by the delayed arrival of our proposed indoor arena/barn, we've mustered through so far with many stories to share on our blog, and we've all had some good laughs along the way!
With out the continued support of volunteers to help with the daily care of our 15 horses, the winter would sure seem a lot longer. Here's to you all for persevering!!!!
With Gratitude,
Stephanie Lockhart
Spotlight on Mas de Domingo
Stephanie & Mas de Domingo

Meet Mas de Domingo, a 17 year old Spanish Mustang gelding, grandson of San Domingo, the Medicine Hat Stallion portrayed in author Marguerite Henry's classic story. Mas has returned to our care after we learned he'd been given away by his previous owner who could no longer care for him. We are thrilled to have Mas back in our herd where he'll be safe and have a forever home with us. His incredible spirit and presence speaks volumes to how special these horses are.
Help Raise the Roof!

We're getting closer to meeting our goal (and our deadline) to Raise the Roof on our indoor arena. Just think...if every person receiving this newsletter donated just $10 each we'd be about $8000 closer to our goal!!!! $10 = approximately 2 latte's or 2 pints of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. We can only do this with your help! Our proposed arena will provide shelter to our horses and serve as a place to offer life enriching experiences YEAR ROUND.

On February 6, CFAFH was featured on The Point 104.7 radio show which highlights community leaders and organizations making a difference. Stephanie Lockhart spoke about the Colonial Spanish horses and what the organization is doing to save this breed.

Many thanks to the host of the show, Lynne Goodson, for giving The Center the opportunity to share about its programs and horses!
Ambassador of theYear
CFAFH President Stephanie Lockhart was recently awarded the Carol Stone Ambassador of the Year award by the Horse of the America's Registry at its 2010 annual meeting in Florida. Stephanie traveled extensively this year with her horses and members of the CFAFH board of directors to showcase the breed and bring awareness of its fragile future. Stephanie was honored to have received this award in 2008 and again in 2010. The award is presented in memory of long time supporter of the Colonial Spanish horse, Carol Stone who was a great inspiration to Stephanie and others involved in this breed.
